Pomegranate (scientific name: Punica granatum L.) deciduous trees or shrubs; single leaf, usually opposite or clustered, without stipules. Flowers terminal or nearly terminal, solitary or several clusters or forming cymes, nearly bell shaped, lobes 5-9, petals 5-9, wrinkled, imbricate arrangement; ovules numerous. The berry is globular, with persistent calyx lobes on the top and thick pericarp; the seeds are numerous, the berry is nearly globular, and the fruit maturity is from September to October. The flesh of the exocarp is translucent and juicy; the inner testa is leathery.

The outer surface is reddish brown, brownish yellow or dark brown, slightly glossy and rough, with most verrucous protuberances. The berry is subglobose, 5-12cm in diameter, usually yellowish brown, yellowish green or reddish, with thick pericarp and persistent calyx lobes at the apex. Seeds numerous, obtuse, red to milky white. Flowering May June. The fruit period is from July to August.
